UC Clermont women’s team looking to rebound this season
Young team plans to build on strong foundation
The Clermont College Cougars women’s basketball team is hoping for a return to success in the 2019-20 season. Head coach Ken Lowe said the team, while smaller in numbers than past seasons, has looked good while winning two scrimmages, and he hopes that translates into continued achievements on the hardwood.
The Cougars last went to the United States Collegiate Athletic Association national tournament in 2016, and they won the national championship in 2014. This year, Lowe said the team has exhibited great camaraderie in the preseason.
“It’s almost like a family atmosphere,” he said. “They are getting along well and are communicating well. We’re hoping to move forward this year and continue rebuilding the program.”
The Cougars will be led this season by the three returning players: senior guard Sara Ventura (Anderson), junior forward Kristi Duncan (Mt. Notre Dame) and junior forward Anna Voskuhl (St. Henry). Five new players also join Clermont’s roster this season: freshmen Victoria Brooks (Mason County), Lauren Carter (Georgetown), Destyne Garmon (Campbell County), Kenzie Harding (Greenview), and sophomore transfer Ta’Jae Hankerson (Purcell Marion).
The Cougars open the season with a few key games, including against Shawnee State (Nov. 9). These games should be an indicator of what lies ahead for the Cougars. Lowe said what’s already clear is that the team has a strong work ethic.
“They have a great attitude,” he said. “They put in the work, and they are a joy to watch play.”
Lowe and his staff, which includes former UC Bearcats player Theresa Davis, and Tim Swart, know the schedule is challenging, but they expect to compete.
“As long as the team doesn’t lose its competitive edge, they will be fine,” Lowe said. “Our success will be defined by effort and how they play the game.”
