Duo authentication changes coming January 2026
UC Office of Information Security recommends push notifications with Duo Mobile App
Effective Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2026, Duo authentication via SMS text messages and phone calls will no longer be supported.
This change is part of the University of Cincinnati's ongoing efforts to enhance security and protect the UC community from increasingly sophisticated phishing attacks that target these less secure methods.
Use Duo Push with the Duo Mobile App
The UC Office of Information Security strongly recommends using the Duo Mobile App on an iOS or Android mobile device (e.g., smartphone or tablet) for multifactor authentication (MFA).
If you’re using SMS text messaging or phone calls to authenticate with Duo, please switch to the Duo Mobile app as soon as possible, but prior to the deadline of Wednesday, January 21, 2026.
- Duo Mobile supports Duo Push, which provides the most secure and user-friendly authentication experience. It also supports the “Remember Me” feature, allowing you to bypass Duo MFA authentication on the same device and app/browser for up to 30 days—providing security and an even better user experience.
- Visit uc.edu/2fa for step-by-step instructions on enrolling your device.
No smartphone or tablet? No problem!
Alternative secure Duo authentication methods are available. For more information on these options, or if you require accessibility accommodation related to this change, please visit uc.edu/2fa.
