Becoming a leader at UC: A Bearcat for Life story
For Shauniece Steele, the University of Cincinnati was more than a place to earn a degree — it was where she discovered her voice as a leader and her pride as a Bearcat.
“The University of Cincinnati played a pivotal role in shaping the person and professional I am today,” Steele says. “My experience at UC went far beyond academics, providing me with the foundation to lead, the courage to persevere, and the confidence to strive for excellence in every aspect of my life.”
Through engaging courses, inspiring mentors and hands-on involvement across campus, Steele learned lessons that extended far beyond the classroom. She discovered how to think critically, lead with integrity, and lift others along the way.
Do you have a Bearcats for Life story?
A foundation for leadership and service
As an athletic administrator today, Steele continues to lean on the lessons she learned at UC. From teamwork and collaboration to the importance of service, her Bearcat experience gave her the tools to lead with authenticity and heart.
“UC challenged me to think critically, act with integrity, and never settle for less than my best,” she says. “Those lessons shaped how I show up every day — for my colleagues, for student-athletes, and for the communities I serve.”
Her time at UC also showed her the power of connection. Whether it was classmates who became lifelong friends or professors who became mentors, Steele credits those relationships for helping her grow personally and professionally.
Pride that lasts a lifetime
Though Steele didn’t attend UC as an undergraduate, her sense of belonging and pride in the university runs deep. For her, being a Bearcat isn’t defined by how long you’ve been part of the community — it’s defined by how deeply you carry its values forward.
“The relationships I built through UC — classmates, professors, and colleagues who became family — continue to motivate and guide me,” she says. “Despite not having the full ‘college experience,’ the pride I feel in being a Bearcat is more than school spirit. It’s a reflection of the values, lessons, and connections that continue to shape my journey.”
Forever a Bearcat for Life
Steele’s story is a testament to the transformative power of the University of Cincinnati. It’s about finding purpose, building confidence and leading with the same passion that defines every Bearcat.
“Forever proud to wear the red and black,” she says. “Go Bearcats!”
