Anita Afzali, MD
The University of Cincinnati College of Medicine's Anita Afzali, MD, professor and interim chair of the Department of Internal Medicine, has been named secretary general of the World Gastroenterology Organisation (WGO).
The WGO is the leading global organization for digestive health, representing more than 120 international member societies and more than 60,000 gastroenterologists worldwide. Its mission is to improve digestive health through education, training and advocacy — advancing innovation and addressing disparities across continents.
As secretary general, Afzali will guide WGO’s initiatives in education, mentorship and sustainable partnerships. This prestigious appointment showcases that internationally recognized gastroenterology expertise and leadership are not only shaping care worldwide but also right here at the University of Cincinnati and in the heart of Ohio.
“Our UC gastroenterology and hepatology programs deliver advanced, research-driven care that draws patients and collaborators from around the world,” said Afzali. “This role is both an honor and a responsibility. I am committed to strengthening global collaborations, expanding education and mentorship programs, and empowering the next generation of gastroenterology leaders.”
