UC’s College of Arts and Sciences presents Discovery In Action Showcase
A&S community welcome to explore the latest in A&S innovation and impact
The University of Cincinnati's College of Arts and Sciences (A&S) invites the university community to the Discovery in Action Showcase, a celebration of the innovative achievements that define the college.
The Discovery in Action Showcase will take place 3 to 7 p.m. Nov. 7 in Tangeman University Center's Great Hall.
A&S faculty, students, and research centers will gather to demonstrate how they bring the college’s new slogan, Discovery in Action, to life through their work.
The event is free and open to students, alumni, faculty, and staff. Attendees will have the chance to learn about ground-breaking research, experience first-hand all new VR developments, network with colleagues and professionals across the university, and preview renderings of the Old Chem renovation while enjoying complimentary sweets and swag.

At the heart of the College of Arts and Sciences, Discovery in Action reflects a commitment to fostering curiosity, creativity, and collaboration across disciplines.
“We’re excited about advancing our college, and the Arts and Sciences experience in a way that captures the spirit of what we do, who we are as a college community, and how the discoveries we make impact our larger world,” said Dean James Mack.

The Discovery in Action Showcase will feature an array of projects and research from across A&S, highlighting the diversity of thought, creativity, and innovation within its natural sciences, social sciences and humanities divisions.
One such demonstration comes from the A&S CEDAR Language Resource Center, where students and faculty are pioneering the use of virtual reality (VR) in the classroom. By integrating VR technology into language learning, students are immersed in real-world cultural contexts, enabling them to deepen their understanding of global perspectives.
“Discovery in Action means our students are empowered, active participants in their own learning,” said Juan Godoy Peñas and Kara Moranski, co-directors of the CEDAR-Language Resource Center. “By facilitating these VR experiences, we allow students to discover new cultural practices that support their development into global citizens.”
This innovative project not only enriches the student experience but also drives forward cutting-edge research on the educational potential of VR.
With projects ranging from explorations in the humanities to groundbreaking research in the natural sciences and insightful studies in the social sciences, the Discovery in Action Showcase exemplifies the interdisciplinary spirit and forward-thinking ethos of A&S.

As part of the showcase, the Discovery in Action Poster Forum Competition will offer a platform for students to present their research and capstone projects. This competition will highlight student achievements and facilitate the exchange of ideas with faculty, alumni, and peers.
Prizes include $1,000 each for the best undergraduate and graduate projects, and $500 for the People’s Choice award.
Winners will be awarded through Catalyst, though it’s important to note that prize awards may affect existing student financial aid. Each team will share their prize, and projects are eligible to win in only one category.
