Campus Recreation offers new membership discount for as little as $4 per month
Making time to exercise is easier said than done, yet it is a critical part of staying healthy and active.
As we enter the season of giving, the Campus Recreation Center (CRC) wants to make it easier for you to take the first step in doing something positive for yourself.
This November, the CRC is offering new members a discounted rate of $30/month for the first year. When UC benefits-eligible employees participate in the Rec Rewards program, they receive a reimbursement of $26.66/month, making the cost of the membership only $4 per month for the first year. This reimbursement occurs after members use the Campus Recreation facilities at least eight days per month.
All participants in the Rec Rewards program will be required to do an initial health assessment upon sign-up, and are encouraged to do a follow-up health assessment at 6 months to a year into the program.
All assessments are free and provided by Campus Recreation staff. Information collected during the health assessment will include: birth date, gender, exercise frequency, smoking status, height, weight, blood pressure, heart rate, body fat percentage and Body Mass Index.
A Campus Recreation membership includes:
- Two facilities: the Campus Rec Center on main campus and the Fitness Center at CARE/Crawley on medical campus
- Free group fitness classes
- 50-meter x 25-yard lap pool
- 6 gymnasium courts and racquetball courts
- 30-minute workout area
- 40-ft climbing and bouldering wall
- More than 275 cardio and weight machines
- Discounted rates on: personal training and more!
To sign up for a membership or initiate the rewards program and schedule a health assessment, please stop in or call the Member Services desk: Campus Recreation Center (West Campus) 513-556-0604, or Fitness Center at CARE/Crawley (East/Medical Campus) 513-558-0604.
Current annual members can refer a friend to be a new annual member and each will receive a FREE month of membership. There is no limit to how many new members a current member can refer. More information on the Rec Rewards promotion can be found on CRC's Bearcats Landing website (UC log-in required).

App turns smartwatch into detector of structural heart disease

An app that uses an AI model to read a single-lead ECG from a smartwatch can detect structural heart disease, researchers reported at the 2025 Scientific Sessions of the American Heart Association. Although the technology requires further validation, researchers said it could help improve the identification of patients with heart failure, valvular conditions and left ventricular hypertrophy before they become symptomatic, which could improve the prognosis for people with these conditions.
