UC Blue Ash strives for unity and community with Black History Month events

COVID-19, entrepreneurship, history and music are among the topics covered in a variety of virtual events that are planned throughout February as part of the Black History Month celebrations hosted by the University of Cincinnati Blue Ash College.

The 10 events will all be virtual and are coordinated by Multi-Cultural Affairs in the Student Life office at UC Blue Ash.

“This year’s Black History Month events are geared toward ways of creating unity and community,” says Tracy Davis, Ed.D, coordinator for Multi-Cultural Affairs at UC Blue Ash. “The events range from opportunities to connect and have fun, to sharing stories of struggle and survival during the COVID pandemic. These events cross race, ages, identities and cultures. I hope they allow everyone to expand their social, educational and personal circles.”

The packed schedule includes game nights every Friday evening in February so you can test your knowledge of Black history icons and facts, a UC Alumnus Business Expo/Symposium, an African American read-in, and a presentation on coping with life as a college student during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The signature event is the February 24 presentation “More than Dancing: Black Women, Black Music and the Mythology of Post-Racial America” by Tammy Kernodle, PhD, a musicology professor at Miami University. This presentation looks at four key events during President Barack Obama's second administration as a lens to understanding the current wave of protest culture that has coincided with the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement and other variant social movements.
