U.S. Department of Justice: UC Law alumni to lead DOJ's OPR
UC College of Law alumni to head Office of Professional Responsibility
University of Cincinnati College of Law alumni Jeffrey Ragsdale will serve as the new head of the Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR), effective Wednesday. He was appointed to the position by Attorney General William P. Barr, in an announcement released this week by the U.S. Department of Justice.
As head of the OPR, Ragsdale will an office of the U.S. Department of Justice that investigates misconduct allegations against department attorneys, immigration judges and law enforcement agents.
Ragsdale, a 1980 UC College of Law graduate, has served as the principal deputy director and deputy counsel for the OPR since September 2016. He currently serves as the acting director and chief counsel. Prior to joining the OPR, he served as an assistant U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia for 29 years.
“The Office of Professional Responsibilities is instrumental in ensuring that the Department of Justice conducts itself in accord with the highest professional standards,” said Attorney General Barr in the release. “I am pleased to announce that Jeffrey Ragsdale will be its new director and chief counsel. Jeff has shown throughout his career at the department that he is a dedicated public servant who knows the importance of the rule of law as well as our ethical responsibilities as the attorneys representing the United States.”

App turns smartwatch into detector of structural heart disease

An app that uses an AI model to read a single-lead ECG from a smartwatch can detect structural heart disease, researchers reported at the 2025 Scientific Sessions of the American Heart Association. Although the technology requires further validation, researchers said it could help improve the identification of patients with heart failure, valvular conditions and left ventricular hypertrophy before they become symptomatic, which could improve the prognosis for people with these conditions.
