Focus on College of Pharmacy faculty with Emma Palmer, PharmD

The James L. Winkle College of Pharmacy welcomes Emma Palmer, PharmD, associate professor of pharmacy practice and administrative services.

Palmer graduated from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in 2011 with a doctor of pharmacy degree (PharmD) and a minor concentration in health psychology. After graduation, she completed a PGY1 pharmacy practice residency at Lahey Health in Burlington, Massachusetts and then moved on to a PGY2 psychiatric pharmacy residency at the Veterans Health Administration Northeast Ohio Healthcare system. After completing her residency training, Palmer worked in academia at Sullivan University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in Louisville, Kentucky.

Palmer’s area of focus is psychiatry, and substance use disorders and severe mental illness are her primary areas of interest.

More about Palmer:

Why did you choose academia over private enterprise pharmacy?

I love that every day is different. I get to help shape future pharmacists, care for patients, and participate in research. What's there not to love?

Why did you choose UC?

UC is an excellent institution of higher learning that retains a level of student-centeredness that is sometimes lost in bigger, research focused organizations. I love that the College of Pharmacy is progressive in its research endeavors but also in meeting the needs of today's student learners.

Is this your first trip to the city, the campus? Impression?

I am a Massachusetts native however my significant other grew up near Blue Ash. Cincinnati is a lively city with a lot to do!

What website do you find yourself visiting most of the time?

That's not pharmacy related- Twitch! Pharmacy related- I spend a lot of time on CPNP.org as it has a lot of resources for my job as well as a vibrant community of psychiatric pharmacists.

What's something few people know about you?

I was a competitive figure skater for nearly 14 years.

What do you do when you're not working?

I have a few things outside of pharmacy I am passionate about. I have a family with a lovely daughter including a number of fur babies- 2 cats, a great Pyrenees, a leopard gecko and a lionhead rabbit. I also love video games and exercise, particularly hot yoga.

App turns smartwatch into detector of structural heart disease

November 10, 2025

An app that uses an AI model to read a single-lead ECG from a smartwatch can detect structural heart disease, researchers reported at the 2025 Scientific Sessions of the American Heart Association. Although the technology requires further validation, researchers said it could help improve the identification of patients with heart failure, valvular conditions and left ventricular hypertrophy before they become symptomatic, which could improve the prognosis for people with these conditions.
