UC co-sponsors climate change lectures at the Mercantile Library
Area experts to discuss local impact from scientific and humanist perspectives

Climate change and its impact on the greater Cincinnati area and its residents will be the topic of upcoming talks titled Science & Nature Lecture: A Three-Part Series. The series was developed by the University of Cincinnati Center for Public Engagement with Science in partnership with the Mercantile Library, and is sponsored by UC’s Taft Research Center.
The series brings together seven area experts to discuss the impact of climate change on our area from a variety of perspectives, from how it relates to the ecology and geology of the region to how it affects our city and its inhabitants.
“We wanted to create a conversation between our audience and some of the impressive local experts on this topic, and we wanted to have a number of different perspectives at the table,” says Angela Potochnik, director of the Center for Public Engagement with Science.

“Our first panel discussion, Understanding Climate Change, brings together experts in science, education, and outreach about climate change. The second talk focuses in on the significant social justice elements of climate change. And the third event is a panel discussion among experts in city government, local farming, and land use.”
The speakers represent “a broad range of backgrounds and expertise—including not just the science of climate change, but also education and human outreach, social justice, agriculture, and local government,” says Potochnik. “And we are bringing this discussion to the human level, examining how climate change relates to our lives and relationships.”
The first lecture of the series, titled Understanding Climate Change, will feature UC College of Arts and Sciences associate professor of geology and anthropology Brooke Crowley; UC assistant professor of social and community psychology Carlie Trott; and Brenda Hunda, curator of Invertebrate Paleontology at the Cincinnati Museum Center.
The series is free and open to the public, and will be held at The Mercantile Library, 414 Walnut St., #1100, in downtown Cincinnati. The first lecture will be held Thursday, Aug. 29 with a reception at 6 p.m. and the lecture at 6:30 p.m. Registration is required.
