Application deadline is Sept. 20, 2019
The Office of the Provost is now accepting applications for Universal Provider funds to support faculty development. Up to $225,000 will be available during the 2020 fiscal year.
What are considered faculty development purposes?
Faculty development purposes consist of activities designed to improve the quality of faculty members’ engagement in teaching, research, service, and leadership. This is in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement which states that, “the University shall provide faculty development programs through all-university access programming organized by Universal Providers.”
Who is eligible for funds?
Those eligible are Universal Providers such as university-established initiatives, centers, or agencies. These may include but are not limited to Instructional Research and Computing, Center for the Enhancement of Teaching & Learning, UC Libraries, or agencies and centers at branch campuses. Academic units, departments, or divisions are not considered Universal Providers.
How to Apply:
Applicants must submit a proposal in the format of a single Microsoft Word or PDF file. Submissions are due via email to Associate Provost for Faculty Development and Special Initiatives, Keisha Love, at keisha.love@uc.edu by Friday, Sept. 20, 2019. Proposals should include the following:
- A narrative summarizing the proposed project, an explanation of who the beneficiaries are, as well as the anticipated outcomes for beneficiaries (1800 word maximum);
- A timeline for completing the project (1-2 pages);
- A budget outline with justifications (1-2 pages); (Please note that Universal Provider funds are limited to be used specifically for the proposed project and cannot be used for the regular fiscal year operating budget.)
Review Process
Administrators in the Office of the Provost will review applications and select recipients. Please send inquiries to keisha.love@uc.edu. Final reports detailing the outcomes of the faculty development activities as well as expenditure of funds will be due by Aug. 1, 2020.

App turns smartwatch into detector of structural heart disease

An app that uses an AI model to read a single-lead ECG from a smartwatch can detect structural heart disease, researchers reported at the 2025 Scientific Sessions of the American Heart Association. Although the technology requires further validation, researchers said it could help improve the identification of patients with heart failure, valvular conditions and left ventricular hypertrophy before they become symptomatic, which could improve the prognosis for people with these conditions.
