Finding her home at UC: A Bearcat for Life story

When she transferred to the University of Cincinnati after her freshman year, Samantha Hillman didn’t realize she was stepping into the place that would shape nearly every part of her life.

As a journalism major, she was searching for something more — a university where she could grow, connect, and carve her own path. UC offered all of that and more.

From the moment she set foot on campus, she felt an energy that was contagious — a blend of possibility, pride, and community that made her feel instantly at home.

“UC gave me a fresh start,” Sam recalls. “It’s where I found my footing — not just in the classroom, but in every corner of campus life.”

Finding her people and her place at UC

At UC, Sam quickly discovered that being a Bearcat was about more than going to class. It was about belonging to something bigger.

She spent her weekends cheering on the Bearcats at football and basketball games, soaking up the excitement that filled Nippert Stadium and Fifth Third Arena.

Between late-night study sessions and campus events, she formed friendships that would last a lifetime.

And somewhere between journalism projects and game-day tailgates, she reconnected with a familiar face — a high school friend who would later become her husband. “UC gave me so many unforgettable memories,” she says. “But reconnecting with him was one of the best surprises of all.”

A career that came full circle

After graduation, Sam carried UC’s spirit with her — the drive to tell stories that matter and to help others find their path. That passion eventually brought her right back to where it all began: the University of Cincinnati.

Today, she helps tell UC’s story to future Bearcats as a part of UC's Marketing + Communications team, highlighting the same opportunities and experiences that once changed her own life.

“It’s an incredible feeling to share what makes this place so special,” she says. “UC shaped who I am, and now I get to help others see how it can shape their future too.”

Once a Bearcat, always a Bearcat

From student to alumna, from campus newcomer to storyteller, Samantha’s journey is proof that UC isn’t just a place you attend — it’s a community you carry with you.

The friendships, memories and lessons she gained continue to guide her in every new chapter.

“UC taught me what it means to grow, to connect and to belong,” she says. “And that’s why I’ll always be proud to say that I’m a Bearcat for Life.”
