UC faculty Andrew Lewis weighs in on Christian vote during pandemic
UC's Andrew Lewis, professor and political scientist, gives input on the president’s recent actions as they pertain to the Christian voter in an article by USA TODAY. The article asserts that while Trump delivered for conservatives of faith with his Supreme Court nomination of Amy Coney Barrett, the Rose Garden gathering to announce the nominee was a snapshot of his crumbling support among swing Christian voters.
“The picture of contrast at that event is notable,” said Lewis, who wrote a book about conservative Christian politics. “They are not taking precautions for people in the room and their family members, which is in stark relief to the potential for a Supreme Court decision to protect the lives of the unborn.”
Professor Lewis's areas of expertise are conservative politics and religion and politics, with a focus on evangelical political engagement. His research engages the fields of political behavior, law and courts, interest groups, law and society, and religion and politics.

App turns smartwatch into detector of structural heart disease

An app that uses an AI model to read a single-lead ECG from a smartwatch can detect structural heart disease, researchers reported at the 2025 Scientific Sessions of the American Heart Association. Although the technology requires further validation, researchers said it could help improve the identification of patients with heart failure, valvular conditions and left ventricular hypertrophy before they become symptomatic, which could improve the prognosis for people with these conditions.
