Solving Wicked Problems Using Participatory Action Research

Instructor: Brittany Arthur

Description

The problems society faces appear to be more difficult and complex to solve than ever before. However, traditional research methods often have flaws that contribute to bias, discrimination, and marginalization. Through this course students will gain an understanding of Participatory Action Research and how this inclusive approach can be used to solve wicked problems. This course will be heavily interactive and discussion based, incorporating in depth exposure to four PAR methods.

Participatory Action Research (PAR) as an approach is unique, as compared to more traditional research traditions, as PAR values community members and includes them as partners in the research process. These approaches value the expertise, strengths, and resources possessed by communities and encourage research with rather than on communities. Evidence supports the use of these approaches to effectively engage populations in rigorous and sustainable research, particularly those who have traditionally been excluded or marginalized.

Throughout the semester, students will experience four PAR methods (Group Level Assessment, Collage Inquiry, Future Creating Workshop, and Photovoice) that will be facilitated in class. Through this experiential learning component, students will gain exposure and be able to reflect on how they can use PAR in their future careers and communities. In addition, we will also discuss the core values associated with PAR such as social justice, democratic participation, and community empowerment. We will explore the question of research ethics and the broader ethical implications of our work as scholar-activists. The content and activities for the course will be experiential in nature, giving students firsthand experience with PAR methods.
