AIST3086: War, Peace, Security, and Conflict in Asia
Description
This course examines issues of war, peace, security, and conflict in contemporary Asia. It surveys China, Japan, the Koreas, Southeast Asia, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and other countries, and US foreign policy in the region. The readings examine social-cultural, ethical, political, and military aspects of various conflicts. What are the human and social costs of war? How do civil wars spill across borders to become international wars or draw in other countries? To what extent have international efforts restrained military build-ups and nuclear programs? The class covers these and additional questions. It examines issues related to human security, state-failure, terrorism, insurgency, and civil war, as well as alliances, arms transfers, conventional military forces, and nuclear deterrence, and the manner in which they influence war and peace in Asia.
